She says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported last week that an Asian carp is just 21 miles from the barrier on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.
The barrier was designed by the Army Corps of Engineers as a demonstration project and is beginning to wear out. The project to replace it with a permanent barrier is almost $2 million short in funding.
Biggert says the federal government must make the project a priority before any of the voracious invaders make their way into the Great Lakes ecosystem.
The Hinsdale Republican spoke at a forum on Great Lakes issues held in Chicago Monday.
