Cockfighting Raid

A group of men arrested during a cockfighting raid pleaded guilty Friday to misdemeanor charges. Authorities say the men also agreed to forfeit their claims to more than 150 confiscated roosters.

Fourteen men were arrested last month at a farm about 40 miles southwest of Rockford in Ogle County where authorities say cockfighting was taking place. Ten of those men pleaded guilty Friday in an Ogle County courtroom to misdemeanor charges of being spectators. Another man pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for holding the fight at his farm.

Arrest warrants were issued for three other men who did not appear in court. Cockfighting is legal only in Louisiana and New Mexico. Rooster owners typically attach razors to the birds' legs, then place them in a ring and bet on which one will survive.
