The Auburn students protesting outside District 205 Headquarters may be small, but evidence suggests discontentment with Rockford Public Schools is growing.

"Ever since she became Superintendent, the schools became less safe, it's just getting to the point where school isn't safe and kids are starting to drop out," says Auburn Sophomore Ruth Palmer.

Their beef is with Dr. Lavonne Sheffield. Carley Gillespie even started this Facebook page, calling for Sheffield's resignation.

"Students should have a say because we're the people who are there in the classrooms six hours a day in the classrooms and we see what goes on," says Gillespie.

We may not know what truly goes on. But violence speaks for itself. Even the Mayor, Larry Morrissey, is considering sending his young daughters somewhere else.

"I've got the same concerns that any parent would have about public safety in schools and I want to make sure we're doing everything as possible to make sure our environment is going to be safe for all of our children," he says, adding his girls would probably attend a private Catholic school.

School violence has gotten so bad, the City agreed to fund an additional three officers to patrol 205 hallways. That's 12 total. This comes in light of last week's near stabbing and arrest of two students who allegedly brought guns to school.

"If students are aware of situations incidents that they are aware of, they should bring those forward and investigate those, what we can't do is investigate rumors," says Chief Communications Officer Mark Bonne.

Four students will address their concerns during a formal meeting with Sheffield Monday. Another protest is scheduled for that same day.

These students are protesting the transferring of Auburn High School Principal Richard Jancek to the Grants Department. And West Middle School Principal Thomas Schmitt's transfer to the Accountability Department. These demotions come in light of declining test scores and recent violence. Several sources tell us there's probably a lot more to the story. That information just hasn't been made public since it's a personnel matter.

Thank you Patrick!!! Apparently, even the Board is unaware of the threats that principals are receiving! I wish one of them would leak some of the documents. I'm going to be SO angry if they say everything is fine because of the change in administrators!

The mayor should send his children to whatever school he chooses. I'm more concerned about people with public school educations in Rockford. If you read these comments, you can COUNT the errors in grammar and spelling. THAT scares me. Thank GOD for Catholic Schools.

There are affordable private options out there. I'm sending my child to Lydia Urban Academy. Its a small private high school with individual attention. Tuition scholarships are available and even full price tuition is only $1500 A YEAR! Thats about $5000 less than other private high schools in Rockford. I refuse to send my children to Rockford Public High Schools and many of the middle schools are just as bad.
