About 900 of the 100,000 unionized SBC Communications workers who began a four-day strike early Friday work right here in Illinois.
Company spokesman Steve Kauffman says most of those employees work in operator services, handling duties like information calls. He says managers have been brought in to staff the lines and the company is looking at bringing in retirees, too.
And while the company is trying to minimize problems, they might continue the length of the strike.
In the last hour, The Associated Press has dialed 4-1-1 four times. Twice, a recorded voice said, "Due to heavy calling, we cannot complete your call at this time."
The other two calls received busy signals.
