The FBI just released its crime statistics for 2006 and they paint a grim picture when it comes to Rockford.
Rockford has one of the highest crime rates in Illinois per capita. Police Chief Chet Epperson says although the cities murder rate remained stagnant between 2005 and 2006.
The crime that showed the largest increase is aggravated assault. There were more than 1,100 last year compared to about 760 in 2005.
One thing to note, Rockford Police changed the way they report their crimes in 2006. Epperson says that may also be a reason for the increase.
