Reclusive Novelist Cormac McCarthy on Oprah Winfrey

In an interview which airs today on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," the 73-year-old McCarthy says writers probably should be writing and not talking about writing.

McCarthy rarely gives interviews. He sat down with Winfrey, who recently named McCarthy's "The Road" as a selection for her book club.

"The Road" is the story of a man and his son wandering through a barren post-nuclear landscape.

McCarthy told Winfrey the idea came to him on a trip he took with his own young son. He said one night in El Paso, Texas, he looked out the window and tried to imagine the city as it might look 50 or 100 years from now and envisioned the hills in the distance on fire.
