SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- State officials say 54 fire departments around Illinois are getting money for more equipment.
The grants total one million dollars and can be used for small equipment and protective clothing.
Governor Rod Blagojevich says local fire departments need to have the right equipment to protect the communities they serve.
The amount of the grants ranges from 77-hundred dollars to 26-thousand dollars.
Last October the governor's office introduced the Small Equipment Grant Program, which is aimed at struggling departments.
Fire departments can apply for grants of up to 26-thousand-dollars.
The money is used for smaller items like protective gear and extrication equipment.
