Pecatonica, Ill. – Lieutenant Kurt Cavanaugh, Commander of the Illinois State Police Zone 2 Investigations, is asking citizens to be watchful for suspicious activities after a recent burglary near Ridott. “Considering the recent incident and the circumstances surrounding it, it is even more important that the public keep a watchful eye out, not only for their safety, but to help us catch those responsible,” stated Cavanaugh.

On Sunday, November 29th, a neighbor noticed suspicious activity at a residence near Ridott. The neighbor confronted the suspects at which time one of them drew a handgun and fired in the direction of the neighbor. The neighbor was not injured.

The neighbor described the suspects as 2 black males driving a blue/gray 1994 Chevrolet van. It has also been reported that a red Pontiac was seen in the area several times on Saturday, November 28th. If you have any information please contact Illinois State Police Investigations at 815-987-7440 or District 16 headquarters at 815-239-1152.

Lieutenant Cavanaugh added, “Citizens need to be aware of their surroundings. Something as simple as a someone stopping at your house and asking directions could actually be a burglar checking to see if anyone is home or casing your house.” “Any time someone that you don’t know stops at your house or you have contact with somebody and it seems suspicious, write down a description of the person and their vehicle, as well as the license plate number,” stated Cavanaugh. “Most people carry a cell phone. Sending yourself a text message containing the description and license plate number is an easy way to have the information available later when police need it,” concluded Cavanaugh.

In Davis, we have heard that people are having their garages broken into. In a town, where alot of people don't lock there doors - our neighbor found a man sleeping in his garage in a sleeping bag. Needless to say, those days of keeping doors unlocked in small towns is over.

I had someone come to my door on the 4th and ask to let their kid use the restroom. There was no child with them or visible in the van on the street. I refused and later learned this is another way people are trying to case houses.
