Committee Narrowly Approves Governor's Education Plan

The Democrat-dominated Executive Committee narrowly approved the governor's plan to replace all nine members of the State Board of Education and take direct control of education policy.

But the bill no longer gives Blagojevich the power to fire any board member at will. It allows dismissal only for incompetence or negligence.

The measure passed six-to-five after senators grilled top Blagojevich aides for nearly two hours. The committee also approved a $2 billion school construction program. The bill no longer requires schools to go through the state for construction.
