First West Nile Virus Death in Illinois

The wife of the first person to die from the West Nile virus in Illinois has confirmed the man's identity.

The state Health Department says 67-year-old Sam Basalome of Westmont died August 10th. His wife, Shirley Basalome, says her 67-year-old husband had heart bypass surgery in 1994 and a kidney transplant in 1996.

His death is the fourth new case of the mosquito-borne virus in the state, bringing to nine the number of human cases in Illinois. The other new cases involve a 42-year-old Will County woman, an 80-year-old Cook County man a 39-year-old Chicago woman.
