Illinois State Tax On Gasoline

The Illinois Senate is having debates on permanently reducing the state's sales tax on gasoline.

Right now there's a proposal sponsored by local senators Severson and Burzynski that would slash the tax by 5% from 6.25 to 1.25% Severson says this would reduce the price of gas 16 to 20 cents per gallon and the tax portion allotted to local governments for road construction would not be affected.

But other senators aren't so sure the cut's the best thing for the state and consumers.
