SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- This is Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week in Illinois.
The ash borer is an exotic beetle that destroys ash trees. The insect was found earlier this year in the Chicago suburb of Skokie, and also has been detected in nearby Wilmette, Evanston and Winnetka.
Governor Rod Blagojevich says it's important that people know what they can do to stop the destruction.
Sam Flood of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says campers preparing for Memorial Day outings need to make sure they don't pack firewood. He says firewood should be purchased locally and then burned before leaving the campsite to prevent further infestation of the ash borer.
The beetle is being blamed for the loss of more than 20 (M) million trees in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Ontario, Canada.
