Illinois MPs Shocked at Iraqi Abuse Allegations

Members of the Springfield-based 233rd Military Police Company say they were assigned to training Baghdad police officers. They say they were unaware of alleged beatings at the Abu Ghraib prison west of Baghdad.

Sergeant First Class Kevin Weber of Hettick says what's alleged against seven correctional M-Ps from another unit is quote, "obviously things you're not supposed to do. It comes as a pretty big shock."

Sergeant First Class Michael Parkin of Morrisonville says he was trained on respecting Iraqi culture, but he says claims by lawyers for the accused MPs that they were under-trained could have merit because MPs were in short supply.
