AAA Wisconsin says the average price of gas in the state has risen to $1.96 per gallon Monday.
That compares with the old statewide record of $1.95 for a gallon of unleaded on June 20, 2000.
AAA Wisconsin's spokesman Michael Bie says prices are likely to keep going up as Memorial Day approaches.
The current statewide average is more than 15 cents higher than a month ago. And it's 44.5 cents higher than a year ago.
Drivers in southeastern Wisconsin are paying even more. Gas is averaging $2 per gallon in the Milwaukee-Waukesha area Monday.
That's attributed to a federal mandate that the area use cleaner-burning reformulated gas to reduce pollution.
