NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city's yellow taxis will be green within five years.
He tells N-B-C's "Today" show that a hybrid fleet will be more fuel efficient and emit less exhaust.
He says cabs now get stuck in traffic and belch fumes. The hybrids will run on a combination of gas and electricity.
The standard cab is now a Ford Crown Victoria, which gets 14 miles per gallon. The Ford Escape, which has been part of an 18-month test, gets 36 miles per gallon.
Almost 400 hybrids have been part of the 13-thousand vehicle fleet for the past 18 months. Models also included the Toyota Prius, Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus R-X 400-h.
The city says the increase in fuel efficiency will save taxi operators more than ten-thousand dollars a year, which will offset the pricier hybrids.
