Swimming Safety

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- With summer just around the corner, state health officials are cautioning swimmers to stay safe in lakes and in the pool.

The director of the Illinois Department of Public Health says there are precautions that swimmers need to take to avoid illness.

Doctor Eric Whitaker says that bodies of water can transmit a number of germs if swimmers are not careful.

He recommends not swallowing pool water and to shower before swimming.

Health officials say swimmers should wash hands after using the toilet and make sure that children take frequent bathroom breaks.

Whitaker also says that swimmers should be vigilant about making sure that swimming facilities are up-to-date with equipment.
