It's estimated that more than 13 million underage kids drink alcohol every year and state leaders say Illinois spends $2.9 billion dollars a year on medical and work costs related to underage drinking.
That was the main topic today at Rosecrance's 19th Annual Community Forum. The substance abuse treatment center in Rockford is trying to reduce those numbers.
The focus this year was particularly on Alcopops, sweet tasting alcoholic drinks. The goal is to open parent's eyes to the issue of underage drinking and get them to confront their children and be open about it.
