NEW YORK (AP) -- A freak accident has killed a one-year-old baby, a year after his soldier father died in Iraq.
Christopher Mercedes was killed by the family car after his mother accidentally left it out of gear and it rolled over the child.
A neighbor in the New York City borough of the Bronx says the mother was hysterical "crying out, 'Somebody help me -- he's all I have." Witnesses say they tried unsuccessfully to revive the boy.
Christopher was an only child. His father never got to see him. He died in Iraq in February of 2006. His wife was pregnant with Christopher at the time of her husband's death.
