FDA To Test Vegetable Proteins

WASHINGTON (AP) -- They're found in everything from pizza dough to infant formula, and protein shakes to energy bars. After the tainted pet food scare, the F-D-A plans to begin testing a wide variety of vegetable proteins imported for use in a host of products.

The list of ingredients to be tested includes wheat gluten, corn gluten, corn meal, soy protein and rice bran.

Word of the testing comes as federal health official reveal that pet food contaminated with an industrial chemical has been fed to hogs in as many as six states. The F-D-A has not said whether any of the hogs entered the human food supply.

Investigators have found an industrial chemical in at least two imported Chinese vegetable proteins used to make pet foods. The chemical possibly was used to skew analysis that measured the protein content of the ingredients.
