Wild Fired

MERRILL, Wis. (AP) -- Lincoln County was the latest area of the state to be affected by wildfires that ranged this weekend during the warm, dry weather.

A grass fire started yesterday in Merrill and took nearly three hours to control after winds caused the fire to spread rapidly.

The U-S Forest Service brought its helicopter out of Superior for numerous water drops.

About 50 acres burned.

A homeowner told authorities that he had a permit to burn and did so Saturday night.

He didn't know a burning ban was in effect.

The homeowner lost a couple of junked vehicles that had been sitting out in a field.

D-N-R Ranger Mike Shohasky says the homeowner will be cited and billed for the fire suppression efforts.

Another fire scorched about 100 acres elsewhere in Lincoln County, while 200 acres were consumed the day before near Black River Falls.
