The hit and run happened just after 10 p.m. Thursday night in the 900 block of south Mulford Road.
A security guard stepped into the road outside the Vanmatre Clinic and was hit by a passing car.
So far Rockford police have no suspects in custody, and are appealing to the public for any information they may have.
Fifty-three-year-old George Laksonen is rushed from the scene of a hit and run accident on south Mulford. Laksonen was a security guard at Vanmater Clinic. He left the clinic looking for a patient who'd walked off the property. That's when a car going north on Mulford struck and killed him.
"There's a lot of debris out on the road,” comments Sgt. Dave Hopkins of the Rockford Police Department.
Police investigators say the debris on the road will be sent to a crime lab to determine exactly what kind of car was involved.
Witnesses describe the car as a dark colored SUV. Police say it may have front end damage, likely to the right side.
"We will be checking body shops to see if anyone has tried getting a car fixed similar to the description,” says Hopkins.
It could take several weeks for police to reconstruct the accident scene.
Until investigators hammer out new details into accident, police are calling on the public to come forward with information.
