Illinois Welcome Center

SAUGET, Ill. (AP) -- A Metro East community that's already home to strip clubs, chemical plants and a Superfund hazardous waste site will have a new title come 2010.

The village of Sauget (SAW'-zhay) will be home to the Metro East's first official "Welcome Center."

The Illinois Department of Transportation made the announcement yesterday.

The Archview Visitors Center is to sit next to the ballpark that's the home of minor-league baseball's Gateway Grizzlies along Interstate 255. It'll be on land donated by Sauget Business Park.

The center is part of a regional effort to increase tourism in southern Illinois, and it will provide visitors with information on Cahokia Mounds and other points of interest.

Mayor Rich Sauget Junior says the center should help improve the image of his village.
