Campaign to Promote Equal Pay Law Generates Quick Response

Officials say about 40 women contacted the Illinois Labor Department Monday, one day after the new campaign was launched.

Some just wanted information, but Labor Department spokeswoman Stephanie Noble says 20 women requested forms so they could file formal complaints. She says the department has gotten more calls Monday than in the nearly five months since the law took effect.

Equal pay has long been a requirement under federal law. A state law took effect in January that expands the requirement to more workers.

Under the law, employers found guilty of pay discrimination are required to pay the wage difference for employees, pay legal costs and face a fine of up to $2,500 per violation.
