A mysterious house fire claimed the life of a Beloit man.
Fire investigators responded to a call for a welfare check at 1860 Congress Avenue in Beloit late Saturday night. Inside they discovered a fire had been burning in the home for hours, maybe days, totally undetected. They also found the body of a man who perished in the blaze.
The cause is under investigation, but authorities say it started in the kitchen. Firefighters say this type of fire is rare because it was totally contained inside the walls of the house and extinguished itself after running out of oxygen.
No evidence of the fire can be seen from the outside, but damage is estimated at $55,000. The victim's name has not been released
