Stephenson County Sheriff, David Snyders is proposing an alternative plan to cutting seven deputies from his staff. The proposal?? Eliminating front door security at the courthouse.
The plan comes after Snyders was asked to cut about eight-hundred thousand dollars from the department's budget. The original layoffs included reducing patrol deputies from 27 to 21 and closing off the North wing of the jail which would put some corrections officers out of a job. Snyders is now asking the union to consider a 2010 pay freeze for its members and is considering laying off six security deputies who monitor the buildings metal detector's and door.
Sheriff Snyders says the plan to eliminate security staff was a tough decision and that three full time deputies will remain in the courthouse building.
