One of the victim's was a District 205 student. And district leaders are now worried about a spike in gang activity at school.

District 205 officials aren't identifying the student right now or saying where the victim attended school. But the weekend murder still prompted special precautions at three district buildings.

They are Guilford, Auburn and Page Park schools. District 205 Spokesman Mark Bonne says they brought in nine additional officers to cover those buildings: four Rockford police officers and five private security guards.

Bonne says investigators tell the school district that the Halloween party murder at a home along the 800 block of Kilburn Avenue was gang-related.

And since they've had heightened gang tensions at the three schools- Auburn, Guilford and Page Park- they're not taking any chances with further violence.

"We want to send a strong message to the students that gang activity is not tolerated, that we have in fact zero-tolerance for it, so that was the reason for deploying the additional security personnel today," Bonne said.

Bonne says the increased police presence will last at least a week. He also says students were informed about it and that grief counselors are available for anyone.

The district says there were no incidents at any of the three schools Monday with more officers on patrol.

As for the murder investigation, 16-year-old DeAngelo Link and 19-year-old Nathan Melendez-Torrance were both killed. No suspects have been arrested.
