Illinois lawmakers want to make sure consumers don't find out too late that they are stuck with their health club or cell phone service for another year.
The House unanimously passed legislation Tuesday that would require businesses to notify customers before automatically renewing contracts with them. It would only apply to contracts lasting 12 months or more.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
Rep. Robin Kelly says constituents came to her because they were frustrated that a health club charged them for a new one-year contract after the original contract expired.
The Matteson Democrat wants businesses to send a written notice 30 days before they deduct money from a customer's bank or credit card accounts.
