CHICAGO (AP) -- A bleak, apocalyptic novel by an author who rarely talks to the media has won the endorsement of Oprah Winfrey.
She's selected Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" as her latest book club pick.
The story of a father and son trying to survive as they wander through a burned and bare landscape was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle prize. It is also considered a leading contender for the Pulitzer Prize.
"The Road" had spent several weeks on numerous best-seller lists, and that could happen again thanks to Winfrey.
A paperback had not been planned until September -- but the publisher, understandably, is coming out with one now.
