The Illinois Senate has passed legislation that could make it difficult for an Indian Casino to be built near the Shabbona State Park in DeKalb County. The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is said to be negotiating with the governor's office to build a casino on land they claim is theirs.
But the Senate voted this week to take the power of granting Indian casino licenses away from the governor and place the authority in the hands of congress.
The Illinois house is expected to vote on these changes next week. Even if a casino were allowed to be built in Dekalb County, little tax revenue would be deposited into state coffers. Indian casinos aren't subject to the amount of state taxes as other casinos are.
