Students Charged for Bringing Gun to School

Two eleven year olds are charged with bringing an unloaded gun to school.

School leaders called Rockford Police after a student at Nashold Elementary School told a staff member that a fifth grader at the school had a gun. The 3-57 magnum was recovered from a student's locker. The gun was not loaded.

Deputy Police Chief Dominic Lasparro says another student brought the gun to school and gave it to the boy who used the locker. Lasparro says one of the boy's knapsacks had two bullets in it.

The students are charged with unauthorized possession or storage of a weapon on school property. They are being held in the county's juvenile detention facility.

The school’s principal Christina Meyer says she was surprised because the students have no history of violence.
