Gov. Rod Blagojevich Monday announced he will dedicate $2.2 billion over four years for school construction and upkeep next year.

The money is part of his capital development plan, which he will unveil to the Legislature Tuesday. Speaking at an elementary school on Chicago's South Side, Blagojevich said the funding will start with $550 million in the next fiscal year.

He says that despite a sluggish economy, the state still needs to build new schools, additions to existing schools and repair old classrooms.
