A former worker may have saved a local company from going up in flames Sunday night.
Rockford fire officials received a call around 7:30 p.m. Sunday night that black smoke was pouring out of DB Metal Finishing Company. When crews arrived they found a fire in the back of the building around one of the shop machines.
It took only minutes to contain the blaze, but smoke could still be seen escaping from vents and doors. The building is designed with a sprinkler system but that didn't activate.
Fire investigators say the former worker, who was driving by the company and called the fire in, may have helped firefighters by catching the blaze in its initial stage.
Nobody was inside the company at the time of the fire. It was back to work on Monday.
