It’s happening every day -- More and more teachers are bringing their personal agenda into the classroom and now many are learning a lesson from behind bars.
The most recent case involves Durand high school teacher Jennifer Bland. She faces 19 counts involving having sex with six of her male students. Now residents in her small town are battling the allegations and fighting the city's reputation.
"Someone already said, 'We are going to have to leave Durand because we are a victim of the rest of the world.' Durand is no different than any other place," says Durand resident Ron Slocum.
Dr. Terrence Lichtenwald conducts mental exams for the Winnebago County court system. He says figuring out why teachers cross the line is a tough case to crack. Lichtenwald says while most sexual predators are men for cases involving teachers, women are equally abusive. He says part of that has to do with some students' belief that scoring an older woman is cool.
“They think they are an adult, they think they can drive a car, drink and have all the rights of adulthood and they don’t,” he says. He says putting a depressed woman in a leadership role could make her more likely to commit a sexual crime.

L.R. - it has happened in rockford schools so many times, that no one cares anymore, rockford is a big city...durand is a small town where things get around and out of control.
Rebecca - Mrs. Bland is innocent until proven quilty. Winnebago has had their issues. Parents need to be monitering their kids activities and check their texting and myspace and facebook -if they really care about what their kids are doing. A little preventive maintance. P.S. Might help if some of the staff their didn't think some of the inappropriate behavior was so funny.
Why is it when a female teacher sexually harasses a student in Durand it makes the news, but when a male teacher in Rockford sexually harasses a student, the city and school sweep it under the rug? Bunch of BS if you ask me. Hm... at least Durand cares about their students.
