With Rockford struggling to bring tourism to the stateline area, a major magazine may help tourism kick, swing and throw its way into the area.
Move over Jane the Dinosaur and Nelson the Sock Monkey. There is now another marketing game in town. Sports Illustrated has named Rockford as the number one sports town in Illinois. The recognition is far reaching for the Rockford park district that prides itself with a thriving amateur and recreational sports program.
Sports Illustrated is recognizing sports towns in every state that demonstrate an involvement in community recreation and an enhancement in the quality of sports.
So why did Rockford beat other cities like Chicago?
"Rockford just does it better than anybody else in the state," says Matt Cline, Sports Illustrated.
With Rockford now being apart of the national sports map, the stateline area now has another opportunity to market itself.
"The opportunities are endless, says Doug Scott, Rockford Mayor.
So Kerry Woods and the Chicago Cubs may adorn the cover of next week’s issue of Sports Illustrated, but it's what's inside the magazine for Rockford that is the real story.
Now Rockford only makes a small blurp in this issue of Sports Illustrated, which is available at news stands now, but on their website, sports illustrated goes through a history of Rockford sports from the peaches to golf.
