House Resoundingly Rejects Licenses for Illegal Immigrants

The Illinois House has overwhelmingly rejected the idea of letting illegal immigrants obtain drivers licenses.

The measure needed 60 votes to pass but got only 43 Wednesday. Sixty-eight lawmakers voted no.

Supporters portrayed the issue as a question of safety. They say illegal immigrants often drive whether they have a license or not, so it makes sense to make sure they get training and buy auto insurance.

But opponents say it would be wrong for the government to offer driving privileges to people who broke the law entering this country.
