Illinois firearm owners' cards require a photo, but Amish residents want an exception for them reinstated.
The Senate Judiciary Committee today OK'd legislation that would exempt Amish from the requirement but said they want a compromise reached with the Illinois State Police.
Cleric Roy Headings of the Fairfield Amish Mennonite Church near Tampico says Amish avoid personal photographs because they believe they lead to idolatry, but he says many Amish are avid hunters. Amish were exempted before the September 2001 terrorist attacks. The state police then rescinded the exception.
Under Republican Sen. Frank Watson's bill people could get the exemption if a church leader provides a letter and they are fingerprinted.
State police officials want to ensure that gun sellers can tell the true identification of potential buyers.
