RICHARD BEUTH HAS BEEN FARMING FOR OVER 30 YEARS. HIS CORN FIELDS HELP FEED THE FAMILY...NOT TO MENTION THE HOGS HE RAISES. WITH POLITICIANS PUSHING ETHANOL, CORN SEEMS TO BE ON EVERYONE'S MIND THESE DAYS.
"Almost every farm magazine we pick up any more that's mainly what they talk about...ethanol."
LAST YEAR STATELINE FARMERS MADE AROUND $2.40 A BUSHEL, PRICES RIGHT NOW ARE ABOUT $3.70 . BUT RISING DEMAND AND POOR SUMMER WEATHER COULD PUSH THE PRICE OVER 4 BUCKS. RICHARD SAYS THE DEMAND HAS HIM PLANTING MORE CORN THAN USUAL THIS YEAR. BUT HE'S WORRIED ABOUT HIS HOGS. THE RISE IN CORN PRICES COULD MEN IT WILL COST ABOUT 15 DOLLARS MORE PER HOG...AND HE HAS TO MAKE A PROFIT.
"we don't mind paying more for corn as long as the price for our pork or beef or milk go up in proportion."
WE'LL KNOW A LOT MORE COME MARCH 30...THT'S WHEN THE US GOVERNMENT WILL ANNOUNCE CORN PLANTING PROJECTIONS FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.
