Weed & Seed Crime Down

A Rockford neighborhood, known for its high crime rate, is showing signs of improvement.

In October of 2005, the Ellis Heights area on the city's west side became part of the crime prevention program, weed and seed. Police increased patrol and partnered with residents to improve the neighborhood.

Since June of last year, there's been a nearly 60% drop in the number of reported crimes. Residents we spoke with say they're seeing improvements too but they want to see more people get on board to keep the momentum going.

One other way the neighborhood is getting safer is through special outdoor lighting and locks police are offering residents. If you're interested in getting these, call the police department.
