The Controversy Continues

The debate over gay marriage continues to stir up controversy even some foes of gay marriage are saying a constitutional amendment isn't the way to go.

President Bush wants Congress to set that process in motion by approving an amendment banning same-sex marriage. It would then need to be ratified by three-quarters of the states.

One top house republican is praising the president for showing "moral leadership" on the gay marriage issue, but suggests he doesn't want to move too quickly toward changing the constitution.

Majority leader Tom Delay of Texas says, "We're not going to take a knee-jerk reaction to this."
