"We will be unable to adequately serve the people of Stephenson county with the service and protection they deserve," Sheriff Snyders said.
Sheriff Synders says he has to cut nearly $800,000 to help eliminate a budget deficit. He says cuts could include going from 13 to five patrol deputies and closing the north wing a the jail, serving about 40 inmates.
But County Board Member Jim Graham says it's too early to say yet if those type of cuts would go through since the budget's not approved until November 30th.
He says the board won't jeopardize public safety in the end. But they want to discuss alternatives, like some revenue sources successful in the past.
"Three to four years ago, the sheriff had a revenue stream of close to a million dollars for housing federal prisoners," Graham said.
Graham says that federal prisoner revenue has dwindled since then to practically nothing. The finance committee meets Monday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Stewart Center in Downtown Freeport for a budget meeting.
