A $250,000 grant to the University of Illinois at Springfield will create an online certification program for math teachers. It's in response to a growing problem in Illinois schools, a shortage of math teachers.
UIS Chancellor Richard Ringeisen says the need for additional elementary and middle school math teachers will reach around 1,200 by 2006.
The online certification will be available for the first time this fall. The site is designed to help teacher aides and people in other professions get back in the classroom.
