A group of labor and business organizations say the state needs to spend road money on what it was intended for, highway construction and maintenance.

The Transportation for Illinois Coalition says Illinois is spending hundreds of millions of road dollars for non-road purposes at an alarming rate.

This year the state is spending nearly $800 million in road money on other budget needs, such as in the secretary of state's office. That's nearly double the level it was three years ago.

The group says not spending the money on road needs increases businesses' transportation expenses and costs thousands of quality labor jobs.

They say consumers ultimately bear the brunt of increased business costs and poor roads. They will ask lawmakers to consider cutting back the diversions this spring.
