IN HIS STATE OF THE BUDGET ADDRESS, GOVERNOR BLAGOJEVICH FOCUSED ON THREE ISSUES HE SAYS SHOULD TOP THE STATE'S LIST OF PRIORITIES. MOST NOTABLE IS THE 1.5 BILLION DOLLAR BOOST HE PLANS TO GIVE SCHOOL FUNDING. HE ALSO DISCUSSED HIS PLANS FOR STATEWIDE HEALTHCARE AND IMPROVING STRUGGLING PENSIONS. BUT WHERE WILL HE GET THE MONEY?
THE GOVERNOR CALLS IT THE "FAIR TAX PLAN." HE UNVEILED THE DETAILS OF THAT PLAN DURING HIS ADDRESS, DESCRIBING ITS MAIN FUNCTION AS A WAY TO ELIMINATE THE LOOPHOLES IN CORPORATE INCOME TAX...
"So here is the choice we now face: overburden the steelworker, the farmer, the nurse, the janitor...or get the biggest corporations who are making billions of dollars in illinois to simply pay their fair share."
BUT ILLINOIS MEMBERS OF THE G-O-P SAY THE PLAN IS TOO AGGRESSIVE...IT SIMPLY MOVES TOO FAST. THEY'RE CONCERED ABOUT THE GOVERNOR'S PLANS TO LEASE THE STATE LOTTERY TO BORROW THE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS BLAGOJEVICH SAYS WE NEED TO LESSON PENSION DEBT.
BUT SOME LAWMAKERS FEEL HE'S IGNORING OTHER DEMANDING ISSUES. SENATOR DAVE SYVERSON IS ONE OF THEM.
"I'm surprised that at a time when hes discussing the largest increase in government spending in history, that they're not putting money into the road program which is so desperately behind."
