A Rockford man is charged with being an armed career criminal.
Police say 48-year-old Kevin Kirkwood illegally possessed two handguns.
Kirkwood has an extensive criminal background, and under a federal law he cannot own a gun.
If convicted, Kirkwood would be sentenced to 15 years in prison with no possibility of parole.
