It happened around noon at the Main Street Pedestrian mall. authorities say the man was working below ground in a trench when a brick veneer wall along side it fell on top of him. Emergency crews and fellow construction workers used a basket ladder and rope to lift the man to safety. The workers were wearing protective gear and police say the men were following proper safety procedures.
Rockford Fire Chief Mark Schlanger says, "It's extremely dangerous. Anytime you get below grade or anything like that, the collapse is one of the main hazards. So these men work in these conditions all the time, they understand what they do."
The construction worker suffered minor injuries and is expected to be okay.
