It's not that clear in a case the Stephenson County Sheriff's Department is looking into from 17 years ago.
Lena is a small town of 2600 just a few miles northwest of Freeport in Stephenson County. It's usually a quiet town, but March 16, 1987, the world changed for the family of two-year-old Christopher Love.
Police had received a call from the boy's uncle, Dave Reed, that Christopher had fallen from a bar stool and was unconscious. The boy was staying at the reed home while his mother worked. But police quickly found a problem.
Stephenson County Sheriff’s Department Captain Keith Eikstadt says, “The account of his falling from a bar stool didn't jibe with the boy's injuries and with the report given by the people at the house.”
There were no other adults in the house, and only two other small children. Cpt. Eikstadt says, “A doctor who performed the autopsy said the injuries were consistent with a shaken baby death.”
Christopher was taken to Freeport Memorial Hospital, but transferred to Saint Anthony Medical Center when he was diagnosed as brain dead. Christopher was removed from life support on March 30.
