Illinois EPA Says Hazardous Waste Collection Doubled

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says the amount of household hazardous waste brought into long-term collection sites doubled last year.

Illinois EPA Director Renee Cipriano says almost 5,055 gallon drums of hazardous materials were brought into the collection centers in Naperville, Rockford and Gurnee. That compares to 2,225 drums in 2002.

Cipriano says the long-term collection facilities are key in helping the public eliminate dangerous waste from their homes. The sites take in items such as oil-based paint, anti-freeze and pesticides.
