More than one in ten Holocaust survivors now living in Illinois met the deadline to file insurance claims for losses dating back to the 1930s.

Illinois has about 10,000 Holocaust survivors. More than 1,300 of them filed claims before the December 31 deadline. Nationally, nearly 28,000 claims were filed.

Several groups said the number might have been higher if the process had been easier. The forms for filing a claim asked many questions that the survivors might not be able to answer, such as policy numbers.

Some people allege the process was deliberately mishandled to reduce the number of claims.

State Insurance Department spokesman Dale Emerson said he was surprised to hear that people had problems. He noted the deadline was extended four or five times to accommodate more claims.
