Two local elementary schools are getting help to keep kids safe on the way to school.
Windsor Elementary in Loves Park, and Ralston Elementary School in Machesney Park received a quarter-million dollar grant from the Illinois Department Of Transportation today. It's part of the "Safe-Routes-To-School Program." It helps build sidewalks so kids will have a safe place to walk and ride bikes to school. The grant also funds crosswalks, solar powered flashing lights, and bike racks. District School leaders are excited about the safety improvements.
"It is just amazing and to see all the kids out here and their smiling faces, because it's not about me, it's not about the district. It's about those kids and making sure they can have a safe way to get too school each and every day," said Xan Milme Harlem School District teacher.
Construction on the sidewalks aren't expected to be complete until next spring.
