City May Bar Bids from Firm in Collapse

Officials say they'll recommend that the contractor involved in the collapse of a southwest side thrift-store be prohibited from bidding on city construction projects for one year.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Construction and Permits says ACS Demolition of Darien had a city contract to clear away two buildings near the Unique Thrift Shop, but Kristen Cabanban says the company did not have a permit to clear a third building next to the thrift store.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the partial roof collapse. Department of Buildings spokesman Jack Beary says the office Thursday also issued a stop-work order against further demolition at the site until engineers say it is safe.
